![]() ![]() ![]() He later started poaching Stratton stockbrokers who preferred to work at Victor’s firm in Manhattan over Belfort’s firm on Long Island. Within days of forming his own business, Victor began spreading rumors that Stratton was on the verge of collapse. It turns out the suspicion was justified. Victor wanted to start his own firm and was thus viewed with suspicion by Belfort. The Chester Ming ( Kenneth Choi) character, for example, is based on a real person named Victor Wang who had a much more interesting role to play in Belfort’s memoir than in the film. The merry band of misfits and former weed dealers that make up the core Stratton staff are mostly based on real people, but their exact work histories and relationships to Belfort are either simplified or omitted from the film. Belfort never even interacted with the FBI agent pursuing him until he was arrested. Belfort also wasn’t reckless or dumb enough to attempt to bribe an FBI agent, as depicted in the film. He would often use his health problems as a partial excuse for abusing various substances, but the film downplays his reliance on pharmaceuticals to alleviate his chronic pain. In an effort to perhaps make Belfort seem a bit less crazed than his on-screen persona, it should be mentioned that despite the film citing “back pain” in air quotes as a reason for his drug habit, Belfort really did have constant back issues that required multiple surgeries. Belfort makes it seem throughout his memoir that people constantly called him “The Wolf” but that appears to be, at best, a creative embellishment. Perhaps it was this idea of playing a character that led Belfort to dub himself the “Wolf of Wall Street.” There is scant evidence that anyone referred to him by that moniker until after the publication of his book. In his book, Belfort writes, “It was as if my life was a stage, and the Wolf of Wall Street was performing for the benefit of some imaginary audience.” Of course, that audience turned out to be real. One aspect of the film that accurately conveys Belfort’s mindset and perspective is its frequent use of fourth-wall-breaking narrations, in which Belfort speaks directly to the camera/audience. His first memoir, The Wolf of Wall Street, was published in 2007. Eventually, Belfort was caught by the FBI and after serving 22 months in federal prison, became a writer and motivational speaker. He later married the Duchess, and they had a tumultuous relationship filled with deceit and abuse that ended in divorce. ![]() He cheated on his first wife with a woman nicknamed “The Duchess of Bay Ridge,” played by Margot Robbie in the film. While all this was happening in his professional life, Belfort’s personal life was plagued by addictions to numerous illegal substances, primarily cocaine and Quaaludes. He recruited young, mostly working-class kids from Long Island to work at Stratton and indoctrinated them into what he repeatedly calls, in his 2007 memoir, a “cult.” They were taught to worship at the altar of money and to con their clients into buying worthless stock. Belfort was violating probably hundreds of laws at any given time, most of which involved defrauding his shareholders and manipulating the stock of dozens of companies. The overall story of Jordan Belfort ( Leonardo DiCaprio) and his brokerage firm Stratton Oakmont, as presented in Scorsese’s film, is true to life. ![]() I did this so you wouldn’t have to! Alright, enough of this, let’s get to those products! 1. ![]() I think I’ve curated the perfect list, and I used a variety of factors to rank these products, including but not limited to:Īnd much more. I took the time to review and research a wealth of products to make sure I found the perfect ones for oily skin. There is such an enormous amount of self-tanning products on the market, that it can be really hard to know what to buy. Blotting sheets are made from oil-absorbing materials that will be gentle on your skin, cleansing it at the same time.ĭo not wipe away at your skin, this might aggravate your skin and actually increase oil production. Carry some in your bag and blot away at your skin when it feels oily. If you exercise or partake in strenuous activity, remember to remove any sweat from your body and shower to clean your skin.īlotting sheets will help you control your oily skin during the day. These build-ups on the skin can actually cause the body to produce more oil, so removing them should cut down how much is produced. Good cleansing products have ingredients that help cut down oil production.Ĭleansing away any excess oil, both in the morning and at night before you go to bed, will ensure that there is no build-up of oil, make-up, skin cells or other debris that might cause blockages or breakouts. Including a gentle cleanser in your skin care routine, every day will help clear away any excess oil. The most effective and long-term way to reduce excess oil on the skin is to have a good daily skin care routine. However, there are ways to scale down the oil on your skin in preparation, and maintenance, of a self-tanner. You don’t want it to leave your tan looking patchy and streaky or make it wash off quicker, which is exactly what oily skin might do to the application of a self-tanning product. If you find that your oily skin has followed you through puberty and even after pregnancy, you might be worried that it might affect the outcome of your self-tanner. Oily skin sometimes goes away on its own in time, but this might not be in time for you to apply your self-tanner. They won’t irritate and will help nourish your skin. Organic self-tanners or self-tanning products that omit harsh chemicals and contain natural ingredients will be kindest to your skin. If you suffer from acne and oily skin, they will definitely be worth spending the extra bit of money. These self-tanners are usually more expensive than regular ones, but they shouldn’t block pores causing acne, blackheads, and whiteheads. ![]() There are some self-tanners that claim to be non-comedogenic. This irritation and oil production are great at causing blockages and acne, which is what you do not want your self-tanning product to do. These chemicals can actually irritate the skin, which in turn causes it to produce more oil to fight back. Some self-tanners contain harsh ingredients. For one, it helps hide the blemishes and acne scars that are caused as a result of oily skin, but on the other hand, it can also add to the breakouts by clogging up pores and causing more oil to be produced. Self-tanners can be both a blessing and a curse for those who suffer from oily skin. Some people find their skin remains clear during pregnancy, as their body can deal with the extra oil, and some aren’t as lucky. While genetics might not decide whether or not your skin is oily, it does determine how badly your skin will react when there is an increase in oil due to hormones during times such as pregnancy or puberty. Genetics also play a role in how your skin reacts to the increase of oil present. Their fluctuating hormones cause an increase in oil production and this, in turn, causes blockages and breakouts. It is no secret that hormones are up and down during puberty, which is why so many teens battle with acne. Seborrhea is caused by either two factors – genetics and hormones. There is a medical term to describe oily skin, seborrhea. Often if too much oil (sebum) is produced, the skin will break out in acne or become clogged. Our body produces it to keep skin supple and soft, but sometimes this production is not regulated properly by the body and there is an overproduction of oil. Finding the self-tanning product that is right for your skin will help prevent any excess oil or blockages, leaving you with a natural and healthy glow. Some self-tanners can aggravate the problem even further and cause the skin to become even oilier. Some people battle with oily skin, it clogs up pores and can cause breakouts, especially on the face. While you want a natural glow with your self-tanning application, you don’t want it to be because your skin is excessively oily. ![]() ![]() If the original store where the merchandise was purchased has closed, merchandise can be returned to a different location, or contact. I mean, there are pros and cons to reading a lot of papers quickly vs reading a few papers intimately.Īs you stated, if you only read a paper for 15 minutes, you're really only going to pick up on a few key points. I found there are very few papers that are worse spending 2 days on, except for the most related work or if you are trying to reproduce a work. Reading one paper in detail is only useful if you really need to understand it for direct application. Or if I want to publish a paper at a new conference, I will skim through the previous year's accepted paper to see what they look likes to get a sense of the "style" of a conference. Skimming through a lot of paper quickly is useful to get a sense of what's done or what people care about in a field you are unfamiliar with.įor example, if I want to work on a specific topic, I might skim through a lot of papers, just focusing on the evaluation to see what's the expected level of thoroughness in the experiment (e.g., number of test projects, accuracy, etc.). If I work in computer vision, there is no point in spending 2 days on an NLP paper, but that doesn't mean you should not look at any NLP papers. I have several levels of "reading" from "I read the title and it looked interesting" to "I tried the source code." All of these levels of "reading" are useful. Both superficial and thorough reading is important and serves different goals. I don't agree that fully understanding a single "key" paper is necessarily the best. Īlso, come join our study group and subscribe on telegram here: \_gan I've been posting easy to read summaries from the papers I read thoroughly (usually takes me about 2-3 hours per paper) on my blog twice a week for more than half a year, and if you work with GANs or want to learn about generative models it might be a useful resource. Hence, I started writing down the main ideas and findings of the papers I read to quickly refresh the main points in my head when needed. Interestingly, I found that just reading the papers is not enough though, because you probably won't remember anything in 2 weeks, especially with this amount of new information that you learn just in case. From those papers, I pick one (or none at all) that seems the most interesting/relevant and read it more attentively. ![]() This field moves so fast that it is easy to get lost if you stop following the new papers for a couple of weeks, hence I try to at least glance at all of the new papers from my field (I work with GANs) on a daily basis and read the abstract/check out the results for maybe 2-3 papers. Just want to chime in since this conversation is so relevant to what I do. I take issue though when someone claims they’ve “read” something when all they’ve done is gone through the abstract, and glanced through it. I’m a firm believe that reading, comprehending and fully understand 1 single “key” paper from whatever field you’re studying, is a much better investment of your time than skimming through 100 regurgitated ideas.Įdit: guys just to clarify, I do believe in skimming abstracts and looking for interesting papers. I’m sorry this is turning into an rant, it just really grates my nerves when people say they read something and in reality all they did was look at the abstract. So we decide to have an impromptu discussion on it and Jesus Christ, I swear the only thing he read was the abstract and maybe glanced at the network architecture. Meanwhile, in the daily meetings we have I mention the paper and how we should try and use some of their components in our own work, and someone says, “oh ya, I read that in like 15 mins”. I’ve got a few colleagues who always claim to be reading papers, but the way they “read” is so damn superficial.Īs an example, I had just finished fully reading/comprehending a paper, and I won’t lie, took me a solid couple days to understand everything fully and reading things multiple times. ![]() Metacademy is a great resource which compiles lesson plans on popular machine learning topics.įor Beginner questions please try /r/LearnMachineLearning, /r/MLQuestions or įor career related questions, visit /r/cscareerquestions/ ![]() Please have a look at our FAQ and Link-Collection Rules For Posts + Research + Discussion + Project + News on Twitter Chat with us on Slack Beginners: ![]() Freeware products can be used free of charge for both personal and professional (commercial use). ![]() Also Available: Download NetBeans IDE for Macįreeware programs can be downloaded used free of charge and without any time limitations. ![]() Task Schedule and other new features in the Tasks window for bug tracking. "I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. "The proper function of man is to live, not to exist," he reads. It's also worth noting the M's eulogy for James Bond ties into Bond-lore. It's a huge move – and one that will inevitably cause controversy. "There were discussions about killing off Bond in dramatic fashion at the end," an insider allegedly said, claiming Boyle called the idea "ridiculous".īond does die in spectacular fashion at the end of No Time To Die. Danny Boyle, who was originally scheduled to direct Bond 25, was previously reported to have left the project over creative differences, with The Sun claiming that the disagreement came from Boyle not wanting Bond to die. We knew Bond would likely be kicking the bucket quite a while back. There's missiles falling on him, and having Craig's character return in any form would take away any emotional heft the ending has. We knew this was going to be Daniel Craig's last James Bond movie, but we didn't know that the former 007 would be killed off in No Time To Die. Bond's found family at MI6 toast to the former 007, Swann drives into the sunset with Mathilde, and "We Have All the Time in the World" – Louis Armstrong's theme from arguably the other most-tragic Bond movie of them all, On Her Majesty's Secret Service – plays over the credits. The missiles rain down – and Bond dies in the process. It's confirmed that Mathilde was his child and Bond loved Swann. Bond kills Safin and, not wanting to risk the fate of the world, heads back to open the blast doors, despite knowing there's not enough time to reach the control room and evacuate the island.īond opens the doors and gets patched through to Swann. Safin closes the blast doors and swipes Bond with a version of the nanobots that targets Swann and Mathilde. Bond shoots his way to a control panel, opens the doors, and makes his way out. Things aren't quite so simple, as Q, operating from an airplane above, needs the blast doors to be open so that missiles can destroy the lab that Safin's built. Safin uses Swann and Mathilde to stop Bond from destroying the project but Swann manages to escape, Nomi kills a few henchmen, and Bond ends up helping Swann, Nomi, and Mathilde get to a small ship to sail away. Bond locates Safin's lair – a former World War Two base – and, with Nomi, the two 00 agents infiltrate the base. ![]() Swann and Mathilde are eventually captured by Safin. At Swann's childhood home, Bond finds her and discovers that she has a daughter, Mathilde. She tracks a rogue US agent (played by Billy Magnussen) who's working with Safin, while Bond goes after Swann. Having seen the devastating effects of the nanobots, Bond's pulled back into action and hunts Safin with the new 007, Nomi, played by Lashana Lynch. However, Safin's not done and wants world-conquering power, and continues to develop the nanobots further. Safin later manages to persuade Swann to wear a sample of the nanobots while visiting Blofeld, killing him. He finally unleashes the weapon at a Spectre party – where James Bond also happens to be. Having found a mole in a secret UK government lab, Safin uses a biological weapon that targets individuals using lethal nanobots. Safin has been orchestrating the deaths of every Spectre member from his villainous island for many years. The assassination attempt was Blofeld's fault, but the iconic villain – played again by Christoph Waltz – has another nemesis who wants him dead. She was also pregnant with Bond's child at the time, as signposted by Swann reaching for her stomach when Bond puts her on a train. Swann, we learn later, was not responsible for giving away her and Bond's position. That may all happen before Billie Eilish's theme song plays, but it's key to understanding the rest of No Time To Die. Bond escapes with his life but blames Swann for the attack, and the two lovers part ways, with Bond leaving Swann on a train. Blofeld, operating from Belmarsh prison using a fake eye, has a Spectre agent attempt to assassinate Bond while he's visiting the grave of Vesper, Eva Green's character from Casino Royale. Many years later, Swann's trying to leave the past behind with James, James Bond, but things soon catch up with them. ![]() Under Card selection > Card selection system select Repetition-spaced, return to the main screen and continue with the remaining steps of this guide. Pleco flashcard Spaced Repetition configuration Below are some straightforward instructions for setting up a perfect spaced repetition setup with Pleco that mimic’s Anki’s system of continuously switching to harder tasks, from passive reading/listening over speaking to writing. The add-on is highly configurable which can be a bit overwhelming, but it also means that once configured properly, you can continue using the same setup for years. The free version of Pleco only comes with a very rudimentary flashcard testing system, so even though you can still use the flashcards from this repository using the random card selection option I highly recommend spending the 10$ on Pleco’s Flashcard System add-on. While the Anki system is great, creating and managing your own flashcards for it is tedious, whereas Pleco provides the ability to create a flashcard from a dictionary entry you are looking at with just a single tap so that, eventually, I found myself switching to reviewing and testing with Pleco’s flashcards. The best spaced repetition system I’ve encountered is that implemented by Anki, which also automatically mixes up the direction of the review: at the beginning you are shown an item in the target language and need to know what it means, as you become more familiar with the item the system will start to also ask you to do the reverse task, showing you the translation and producing the word or sentence yourself. This technique maximises the learning effect per time spent reviewing. Spaced repetition is a highly efficient learning technique where the intervals between reviews of the same vocabulary items increase over time as you get more familiar with them. Spaced repetition with the Pleco flashcard system add-on If you are not familiar with Pleco’s flashcard system yet, be sure to continue reading on how to set up an ideal spaced repetition testing system. Once imported you will see subcategories for the individual lessons, which allows you to only review the vocabulary for specific lessons, or to expand your test sets over time. The flashcards can be imported into Pleco using the Import > Import Cards function. In this repository you can find per-lesson flashcards that can be used for the widespread 汉语教程 Hanyu Jiaocheng books as well as for the corresponding 汉语口语速成 Short-term spoken Chinese series (see the flashcards directory for available card sets and their respective book editions).
